History

The inhabitants of the South Chilcotin area shaped the land’s cultural history. The first inhabitants were nomadic native Indians who roamed these mountains for 10,000 years. They harvested soopollalie berries and obsidian, a dark glassy volcanic rock is used for making arrowheads, to trade with coastal natives. During the 18th century, the French and English fur traders arrived and established a network of fur trading outposts to trade with the native Indians. Prospectors followed in the 1840s to mine gold in the region and guide outfitters packed international tourists into the area since 1880.

Today you can still feel the spirit of the hardy souls that tamed this land, looking for life’s elusive rewards. Only now these rewards are adventure experiences that can be found in the Chilcotin Mountains.
